Datagraphic is leading the way in transparency and sustainability by delivering a full cradle-to-grave analysis of its services. Through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), clients gain a comprehensive and transparent view of the environmental impact of Datagraphic’s print and mail services, empowering informed and responsible choices.
What are Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a verified, standardised document that details the environmental footprint across a product’s lifecycle. From raw materials and production through to usage and disposal, an EPD encompasses the entire journey.
EPDs are based on Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), following international standards, which provide transparency and credibility for companies aiming to demonstrate sustainability to their clients and stakeholders.
Datagraphic’s sustainability journey
For over 30 years, Datagraphic has delivered data-driven communication solutions to various sectors, including local government, healthcare, finance, and utilities. Sustainability has always been part of its DNA, achieving certifications including ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 50001 for energy management.
However, as client expectations have evolved, particularly in public sector contracts, Datagraphic recognised the need to go beyond simply reducing its environmental impact to also provide transparent proof to clients. That’s where EPDs came in.
“EPDs give us a way to quantify and transparently report the full environmental impact of our print and mail processes,” explains Peter Wells, Datagraphic’s Responsible Business Manager. “It’s about showing clients hard data, not just promises.”
Partnering with Pro Enviro
Developing an EPD is a complex process. Datagraphic partnered with Pro Enviro to ensure the EPD process was conducted by an expert environmental consultancy.
The process starts with defining the scope. Datagraphic adopted a cradle-to-grave approach, encompassing the entire lifecycle, from paper production and ink to energy use and transportation logistics. Working together with Pro Enviro, we collect detailed data to perform a Life Cycle Assessment, compile the EPD report, and seek validation.
The collaboration was seamless. As a certified B Corp with SBTI-approved and validated targets and an ethical supply chain embedded through operations, Datagraphic had a significant head start. Its existing sustainability practices and certifications streamlined data collection, vastly reducing the timescales.
Driving impact and client trust
Clients, particularly in the public sector, value transparent and verified environmental data, which strengthens Datagraphic’s reputation as a robust and committed supplier.
“EPDs aren’t just about compliance,” Peter Wells emphasises. “They’re a tool to improve operations, meet client expectations, and contribute to our net-zero goals.”
Why EPDs matter for businesses
Environmental Product Declarations are becoming increasingly relevant across all industries.
James Hoarle of Pro Enviro notes:
“EPDs help companies benchmark against competitors, improve processes, and achieve ESG goals. They’re an investment in reputation, efficiency, and market access – not just a trend.”
In fact, some organisations will only consider working with a supplier that holds a valid EPD.
Looking ahead
Datagraphic’s direct operations are already carbon-neutral, meaning clients can decarbonise their mailing operations from day one. Furthermore, the strategy entails continuing to reduce Scope 3 emissions, exploring more sustainable materials, and expanding digital services to minimise physical outputs. By leading with transparency and accountability, Datagraphic is setting a benchmark for sustainability in the print and mail industry.
“We want to keep leading by example, measuring and sharing our progress transparently,” says Peter Wells.
Conclusion
EPDs are transforming the way businesses measure and communicate sustainability. Datagraphic’s journey demonstrates that with the right expertise, commitment, and collaboration, EPDs can be a strategic tool for reducing environmental impact, building client trust, and gaining a competitive advantage.
