Datagraphic funds Chromebook lending scheme in Newcastle City Library.
At Datagraphic, we believe technology should empower, not exclude. That’s why we’re proud to partner with our client, Newcastle City Council, on an innovative digital inclusion project aimed at reducing digital exclusion in the community.
Creating social value through partnership
As part of our goal to use business as a force for good, we’ve funded the provision of 40 brand-new Chromebooks to Newcastle Libraries. This adds a vital device lending option to the city’s well-established digital inclusion programme, supporting people who may not otherwise have access to a computer or the internet at home.
This is the first scheme of its kind in the Northeast and a key milestone in the ‘Get Newcastle Online’ initiative, which already provides training, SIM cards, and access to tablets. With the addition of Chromebooks, even more people can benefit from digital tools that support them in everyday life.
Councillor Paul Frew, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said:
“We know that for some in our city, not having access to a laptop at home can be a real barrier. I am delighted that by working in partnership with Datagraphic, we can help remove those barriers.
“Our Chromebook lending scheme is not just about providing technology, it is about empowering our residents to improve their digital communications skills, get online and connect to the digital world.”

Peter Wells, Responsible Business Manager from Datagraphic, said,
“At Datagraphic, we believe that business should deliver a meaningful contribution to the world. Whether that’s environmental, for its people, in the supply chain or in the wider community, contributing to a more sustainable future is at the heart of responsible decision making.
“For us, this scheme is a natural extension of our values and the kind of meaningful partnerships we aim to build.”
What the scheme does
The Chromebook lending programme allows Newcastle residents to borrow a secure, ready-to-use Chromebook for up to 12 weeks, completely free of charge.
It’s designed for adults who are:
- Searching and applying for jobs
- Accessing council or health services
- Writing a CV or managing finances
- Improving digital confidence and skills
- Keeping in touch with loved ones
For many, a device like this is more than just a tool – it’s a lifeline to essential services and personal opportunity.
Residents can apply online, by phone, or in person at Newcastle City Library. Following a short appointment, the member collects the Chromebook and receives setup support from the team. The device can then be used from home or anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection.
Whether it’s someone exploring technology for the first time or seeking reliable access for job hunting, the scheme is designed to be inclusive, practical, and empowering.
Why this matters to us
As a Certified B Corp, Datagraphic actively seeks ways to be a better business. This scheme reflects our ongoing efforts to:
- Remove barriers to technology and drive inclusivity
- Help close the digital divide
- Support local authorities in delivering better outcomes for communities
We’ve spent over thirty years helping organisations transform how they deliver essential communications, and we’re just as passionate about using that experience to create lasting impact beyond business.
This is just one example of how collaboration between local authorities and responsible businesses can directly benefit people’s lives – and it certainly won’t be the last.
“At Datagraphic, our aim is to contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive future – whether that’s through innovation, community partnerships, or responsible operations.”
– Peter Wells, Datagraphic
